Comprehensive Balanced Literacy (CBL). Instruction will be given in implementing the Utah State Language Arts Core during the Comprehensive Balanced Literacy (CBL) Block (Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Writing) with content core (Science & Social Studies) integration. You will need access to a class or a group of students (own kids, neighbors, etc.) in order to complete assignments.

DIBELS for Teachers. This highly-informative course will take you through several modules where you will learn to:  navigate the Amplify site, use DIBELS to progress monitor your students, use reports to create RTI groups, create small-groups for instruction, and set pathways of progress.  Once you are registered on JPLS and choose a section that works for your schedule, you will be sent an invitation to join this Canvas course.   Don't miss this opportunity to enhance your skills by implementing DIBELS ideas into your classroom instruction.

Journeys ELA Resources. This online course, participants will learn about the variety of K-6 HMH Journeys ELA Resources and how they can be used for explicit ELA instruction in the classroom. Teachers will gain an in-depth understanding and will be armed with some good tools to use with regard to the 2017-2018 JSD K-6 curriculum maps.

Reciprocal Teaching. Reciprocal Teaching is a scaffolded discussion technique that involves four strategies good readers employ when they read: predict, question, clarify, summarize.

DIBELS: Amplify Website. Teachers will learn how to: navigate the site, print reports, set pathways, create small-groups for instruction and look at tests.
Recommended Grade Level: K-3 Recommended Time: 1 Hour

DIBELS: Progress Monitoring. Teachers will learn how to: use DIBELS results to determine who needs to be progress monitored, install the assessment app on the iPad, use the laptop or iPad to assess, look at data, and run reports.
Recommended Grade Level: K-3 Recommended Time: 1 Hour

DIBELS: Classroom Application. Teachers will watch a small-group lesson with a focus on fluency. Multiple classroom application ideas will be shared.

Phonics K-2. Teachers will review phonics lessons available through ThinkCentral, look at the Phonics Scope and Sequence, and learn to create a small-group lesson with a phonics focus. Discussion will focus on phonemic awareness, phonological skills, word work, sound/symbol relationships, word families, the alphabetic principle, onset and rime, and spelling strategies.

Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessments. Teachers will learn to use the F&P kit to identify an appropriate Guided Reading level for student instruction.

Running Records. Teachers will learn the purpose of running records and how to administer a running record using standard coding.
Recommended Grade Level: K-6 Recommended Time: 2-4 Hours

Analyzing Running Records. Teachers will identify specific instructional gaps for students by analyzing and using the data gathered from a running record.

Academic Vocabulary. Teachers will learn to incorporate Academic Vocabulary into the daily routine.

Growth Mindset. Teachers will learn that talents and abilities are not set but subject to growth, and how this impacts student progress.

Visible Learning for Teachers. Understanding strategies that have high impact on student achievement and the underlying principles of those strategies.

Reciprocal Teaching. Teachers will learn to empower students through clarifying, questioning, predicting, and summarizing roles.

Explicit Comprehension. Teachers will learn how to model and provide explicit instruction of several comprehension strategies.

Close Reading. Teachers will learn about the principles of close reading, purpose and timing of its use, and grade appropriate questions to drive classroom discussion.

Fluency. Teachers will learn what fluency is, the connections to comprehension, and how to explicitly teach and assess fluency.

Writing Instruction and  SAGE. Teachers will review materials and ideas to use during daily instruction to prepare students for the SAGE assessment. Teachers will learn to use Journeys Write Smart in the classroom.

Using Journeys. Teachers will learn how to access and explore Think Central, and to utilize the components of the Journeys curriculum.
