Online Professional Development Opportunities

Digital Citizenship Online. In this course participants will learn what digital citizenship is, how to teach students to be responsible digital citizens, and how to talk with students openly about cyberbullying and other potential pitfalls of social media. Participants will learn the how to model digital citizenship and develop tools and lessons to use with students of all ages.

Utah Online Library Preschool & Elementary. This 6-week online class is designed to help preschool and elementary teachers and library media specialists effectively use the wealth of information resources in Utah’s Online Library to enrich their teaching and students’ learning. The course guides participants through using the many databases of newspapers, journals and magazines as well as encyclopedias, videos, music collections and more. Each week participants add on to a resource list, as well as explore project-based learning activities and effective research strategies that ensure students benefit from Pioneer resources as well.

Utah Online Library - Research and Reference. This course guides K–12 teachers and library media specialists through the hundreds of thousands of digital resources licensed for educational use by Utah educators and learners. In addition to gaining familiarity with online databases included in Pioneer Online Library, participants practice applying the Utah library media core curriculum’s six-step process for information problem-solving while sharing ideas for incorporating research and multimedia resources into lessons and projects for students.

Canvas for Online Learning. This is an online course teaching the features found in the LMS Canvas for teachers. Teachers will gain information on how to create course content for a blended learning environment in Canvas.

Chromebooks and the Cloud Classroom Elementary. Bring the Cloud to your Classroom! This professional development is designed to help educators effectively integrate Chromebooks and Cloud tools into a project-based educational framework. Participants gain experience using Chromebooks, evaluating online tools for educational use, and exploring strategies for teaching with this technology.
Recommended Grade Level: K-6 Recommended Time: Up to 15 Hours

Multimedia Projects with iPads. The iPad’s powerful collection of multimedia tools provides new and innovative ways for students to demonstrate learning through creative and motivating projects. This professional development is designed to help educators effectively integrate this technology into a project-based educational framework. Participants will learn to utilize the iPad to plan, teach, manage, and evaluate a variety of student-created multimedia projects tied to the core curriculum.

Google Tools for Elementary. This courses introduces elementary teachers to Google Apps for Education, which is available for students in grades 3-6. Google Apps for Education (GAFE) is a suite of secure web-based and collaborative applications that include Documents, Slides, Sheets, Forms and Classroom. It allows students and teachers to work and learn together anytime, anywhere, and on any device. GAFE is hosted by Google, and is managed by Jordan School District. When students log into their school google account, they are seamlessly connected to the GAFE suite of productivity and collaboration tools.

Connected Educator, Developing Your Personal Learning Network. This course helps teachers tap the educational potential of social media tools for your classroom. Participants will learn how tools like Twitter, Pinterest, Teaching Channel, Google +, Facebook, and more can be incorporated into your classroom. Along the way, participants will explore strategies for using social media tools to challenge and engage students, as well as improve parent-student-teacher communication.
Recommended Grade Level: K-12 Recommended Time: Up to 15 Hours

Online Tools for Flexible Formative Assessments. Effective formative assessment can transform the teaching and learning experience and dramatically improve student-learning outcomes. This course focuses on why formative assessment is important and how to effectively use it in the classroom with the help of several online tools.
Recommended Grade Level: K-12 Recommended Time: Up to 15 Hours

MasteryConnect. Learn to navigate MasteryConnect and what it can do to help you in your classroom. Create your profile, create a Mastery Tracker, create and add assessments, find assessment aligned to your core in the community, and score assessments in four easy ways. The next step is using MasteryConnect in your classroom. You will create, copy and collaborate on curriculum maps, organize standards, then create a Mastery Tracker from a curriculum map, Identify a benchmark and SLO assessment, find, read and interpret various teacher reports.

EDUC 5820 Designing and Producing Media for Instruction. This course is designed for students to learn to produce educational media materials. Participants have the opportunity to collaborate with others to design, produce, test, and revise a unique project for video, multimedia, the web, mobile applications, video games, radio, photography, or other formats. Participants will learn to use a variety of tools and formats. This course explores several analytic frameworks drawn from both instructional design and educational research.

EDUC 5810 Instruction, Curriculum and Educational Leadership in the Digital Age. Following an exploration of the history and models of instructional design, students will learn to incorporate appropriate digital media formats to create an online learning environment. Students will be introduced to the integrated nature of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) as frameworks for identifying and applying the knowledge needed to teach and assess student learning with technology. The course will also address issues of leadership, as students may become mentors in the area of educational technology.
