Back by popular demand! Join Kristin Poage for this research-based session. Understanding the role that the metacognitive system has to enhance students understanding of their thinking and learning becomes a central component to a student’s success. In this session we will explore how teachers and students can use cognitive skills to analyze and utilize knowledge, while using metacognitive skills to help perform mental and physical processes they will use throughout their lives.
Participants will learn:
- A common definition of metacognitive, cognitive, and conative skills
- Using reflective practices to enhance student learning
- How increasing "noticing behavior" can help teachers foster an environment of reflection
Kristin Poage is a middle school principal, professional development presenter, and district leader. She helped to create a standards-based grading and assessment movement in Monroe County schools in Indiana. Kristin has also been an adjunct faculty member of the Indiana University School of Education, where she instructed preservice secondary English educators, and a training consultant at St. John Associates.
As a teacher leader in Monroe County, she helped to create proficiency scales, train other educators, and implement standards-based classrooms at all grade levels. Kristin also helped develop a joint initiative with her district and Indiana University to train and implement a co-teaching model. She has conducted a series of professional webinars about moving from a traditional graded classroom to a standards-based, scale-scored classroom.
